Senior Congress leader and former minister Niranjan Patnaik on Sunday criticised the State Government for depriving the people of Keonjhar district of their long standing demand for a full-fledged Government medical college.

In a statement released here, Patnaik said the Centre on the recommendation of the State Government had approved four medical colleges with 100 seats each in the 12th Five Year Plan in Balasore, Koraput, Mayurbhanj and Balangir districts.

“While the State Government has sanctioned two Government medical colleges in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts within a distance of 50 kms, Keonjhar district which contributes maximum revenue to the State exchequer has been left out,” he said.

The former president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) said the hopes of  Keonjhar people have been shattered following withdrawal of the steel major ArcelorMittal which had proposed to set up a mega steel plant in the district.
