Bijipur area of the Silk City witnessed artificial flood on Wednesday evening due to callousness of a contractor.

The contractor, Subhendu Swain, had taken a contract of renovating Bijipur pond spread over 10 acres of land. Before draining out the water from the pond, his workers dug up a portion of its embankment on Wednesday evening. The main drain of Berhampur runs on the other side of the pond.

When the embankment was dug up, water of the pond entered the houses in nearby low lying areas. As a result, the houses were flooded with filthy water.

Locals said even boundary walls of some houses collapsed unable to withstand the force of water from the pond which got mixed with sewerage from the main drain.

On Thursday, BMC Commissioner Ajit Mishra visited the spot and directed workers to cover the area with sand bags. The locals have registered a complaint against Swain at the Town police station.
