More than 20 persons were injured during a clash between police and villagers at Kankerei village under Nisha police limits of the district on Friday morning.
Police arrested more than 200 villagers for opposing the ongoing pipeline work of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) on a Government land near the village.
The irate villagers led by BJP leader Rajendra Singh also staged a road block on Angul-Chhendipada NH-63 since morning and sat on a dharna in front of the Collectorate.
Sources said the villagers of Kankerai have been opposing the laying of pipeline in their village for the last two years demanding that their village should be taken over by public sector Mahanadi Coalfields Limited.
As MCL refused to acquire the village, the JSPL diverted the pipeline route from the village and is undertaking it on Government land only.
“There is no point in opposing the pipeline work as we need it to draw water from Samal barrage urgently,” said a senior official of JSPL Ashish Pandey.
