ACC Workers Take to Street

BARGARH: Hundreds of workers of ACC Cement Limited here took out a rally and staged demonstration in front of the Collectorate on Friday demanding immediate renewal of permission to mining of limestone which reflected on production of cement besides threatening their livelihood. They also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to the Collector seeking intervention in the matter.

The Mining Department had put a cap on raising and transportation of limestone from the mines on September 16. Later, the Kosal State Co-ordination Committee lodged a complaint with the Bargarh police against ACC Cement over the matter.

However, the workers defended ACC and blamed the State Government for disruption in mining. Pointing out that the State Government had committed to grant mining lease to ACC Cement, they said the company has been paying all legitimate dues. The second renewal of quarry lease has been pending with the Government since 2004, they added.
