KENDRAPARA:  Body of the boy, who drowned when a boat used for evacuation of villagers capsized in Bausagali river, was found on Monday. He was identified as 12-year-old Hemanta Mallick of Satabhaya village. The body has been handed over to his parents.

Hemanta and Puja Mallick had drowned when the boat in which they were travelling capsized in Bausagali within Bhitarkanika National Park limits on Saturday. Total 35 persons were on board the country boat and 10 were seriously injured. They were being evacuated by the district administration from erosion-hit Satabhaya village to a cyclone shelter at Okilapala in the district ahead of cyclone Hud Hud.

Villagers alleged that they had urged the district administration to provide a mechanised boat, but the authorities deployed a country boat for evacuation. “As the boat was overloaded, it capsized,” said Arakhita Mallick, a survivor.

Collector Pramod Kumar Das said an inquiry has been called to find out the cause that led to the boat capsize and families of the deceased would be compensated.
