Petition on Drowning of Students

BHUBANESWAR: A petition has been filed before the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) seeking a direction to the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of School and Mass Education Department for submitting a report on the recent drowning of four students in Puri canal.

In his petition, rights activist Bijay Panda said the Government undermined the gravity of the incident by allowing inquiry by a Sub-Collector-level officer and shifting of the headmistress. Besides, the compensation of `one lakh was too inadequate. Requesting stringent action against the school authorities, the petitioner said an ex gratia of `10 lakh should be paid to the kin of the deceased.
