JAGATSINGHPUR:Miscreants struck at the house of a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Judge at Kania village under Balikuda police limits on Sunday night and decamped with cash and jewellery.

According to reports, a gang of burglars broke open the main door of the house of Shovan Kanungo, JMFC-Bhawanipatna, at his ancestral village Kania and looted cash worth Rs 30,000 and 10 grams of gold jewellery and a laptop. Kanungo currently stays in Bhawanipatna with his family members and the Kania house remains locked. His relative Amiya Das visits the house everyday for performing puja.

The incident came to light when Das opened the house on Monday morning. He found the ‘almirah’ in the house broken and the cash and jewellery missing.

Das lodged an FIR stating that property worth Rs four lakh -  10 grams of gold, one laptop and cash of Rs 30,000 - have been stolen from the house. A team of Balikuda police rushed to the village for investigation.

Later, police came to know that the miscreants had left the village leaving behind Rs 3000 on the premises of the village temple. They seized the money and detained one person for questioning.

IIC of Balikuda police station Balaram Nayak said though preliminary investigation revealed theft of valuables worth Rs four lakh, they cannot be sure of the actual amount as none of the family members was present in the house. He said the JMFC Judge has been informed and on his arrival, the actual loot amount can be ascertained.

Meanwhile, a special police squad has been formed to investigate the case.

On May 30 night, seven to eight masked men had broken into former Judge of Orissa High Court Justice PK Mohanty’s house at Sector 11, CDA in Cuttack. They looted cash and gold ornaments from the Judge’s house.
