BHUBANESWAR: A low pressure formed off southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coast is expected to push the south-west monsoon out of its sluggishness. This system over the Bay of Bengal, along with another system likely to form off Saurashtra coast, is expected to invigorate the monsoon which has practically turned stagnant for the last four days.

The northern limit of the monsoon (NLM) may have progressed into south Odisha but has left rest parts of the State uncovered since June 14. While there has been moderate showers across the State, any significant precipitation activity has eluded it so far. As a result, the State has recorded a two percent deficit in rainfall during this month.

However, the formation of the low pressure could correct the deficiencies in the rainfall activity. It is expected to become well-marked by Thursday and turn into a deep depression bringing in more showers in the State till June 21.

While entering Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the system may trigger very heavy rains. As of now, heavy showers have been reported in coastal Andhra Pradesh and the intensity will rise as the system intensifies in next 48 hours.

Sources in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the system will unleash heavy showers in southern and western districts of the State as a result of which flashflood situations may also arise.

Private weather forecaster Skymet India said, although the western arm of the monsoon has moved, covering parts of Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, its eastern arm has been stagnant.

“Even though it has rained in several parts of Odisha and few places of West Bengal in last few days, heavy rains in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar are expected in next two days. In one go, the monsoon is expected to cover Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and parts of Bihar by the weekend,” it added.

While the Bay of Bengal system is expected to move through Telangana, northern Maharashtra, western Madhya Pradesh by June 23, another low pressure is expected to form over Arabian Sea on June 19. Forming south of Saurashtra coast, it is expected to hover in the same area for the next three days and there is a possibility of this system turning into a depression and move into the Gujarat.

While rejuvenating the stagnant monsoon, these two systems could unleash heavy showers along eastern and western coast of India and even drag the rainfall coverage area to northern Indian states.
