BHUBANESWAR:  Even three days after a contractor and his associates were assaulted by a group of outsiders at Utkal University, the police are yet to make any headway.

The incident occurred on Friday night when a group of youths went to a construction site and attacked the contractor. Sources said the miscreants have strong political links which is why police are hesitant to take any action. The contractor, who was allotted construction work of a 300-bed hostel on the university campus, was repeatedly harassed by the youths who tried to extort money from him.

The assailants had earlier threatened the contractor of dire consequences, sources said. He later approached Saheed Nagar Police. Apart from the contractor, two supervisors and three labourers were injured during the clash.

An FIR has been registered in this connection and the police are investigating into the matter, a senior officer said.
