BERHAMPUR: A gangster Akhaya Nayak was arrested from Nirmalajhar area under Khallikote police limits after an encounter with the police on Thursday.
Nayak of Athagadapatna village in Kabisuryanagar police limits was admitted to Khallikote hospital after he sustained bullet injures. He is stated to be out of danger.
Ganjam SP, Narasingha Bhol said during patrolling, Khallikote police saw Nayak and his accomplice speeding away on a two-wheeler. When the cops tried to intercept them, they did not stop and instead, opened one round of fire at the police vehicle. The police retaliated with two rounds of fire and the miscreants fell down from the motorcycle.
While the bullet hit the knee of Nayak, the other miscreant managed to escaped into a forest nearby. Police overpowered Nayak and seized a pistol and two rounds of ammunition and the motorcycle from him.
Nayak was identified as one of the members of the Rabi Das gang and wanted by the police in at least eight different cases, including attempt to murder, bombing, extortion and dacoit cases in Kabisurya Nagar, Polasara and Kodala police limits.
