Expert Panel to Review Kusei Bridge Layout

BHUBANESWAR: An expert committee will be constituted to review the alignment of the proposed bridge over the Kusei river at Belbahali near Anandpur in Keonjhar district.

The committee will have two members __ an IIT Professor and a technical expert of the State Government. The committee will study the structural design and its alignment and take the views of the local people who are opposed to the approved design.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari gave this direction to the National Highway Authority after meeting a delegation of the State BJP leaders headed by K V Singhdeo at New Delhi.

A decision on realignment of the bridge will be taken on the basis of the expert committee’s report, Singhdeo told this paper.

The BJP delegation took up the matter with Gadkari as the State Government is defiant on the issue. Rural Development Minister Badrinarayan Patra said the proposed alignment of the bridge is the best possible one for the region as well as the State.

The villagers’ protest against construction of the bridge led to a clash with the police when the latter used force to evict the agitating people on July 7. A large number of people were injured in the police lathicharge.

The delegation also met Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani and drew her attention to newly opened Kendriya Vidyalayas, which are running in rented buildings.

The delegation comprising Manmohan Samal, Sangita Singhdeo, Pratap Sarangi, Mohana Majhi, Bhrugu Baxipatra and Binod Dash also met Union Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and complained about the poor service offered by BSNL in the State. They further sought a direction to BSNL which was planning to shift 250 base transceiver station (BTS) to other States.

The State BJP leaders also called on Union Energy and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal and requested him to make a review of the MoU signed for thermal power projects in the State.
