Action against Biridi Inspector Sought

JAGATSINGHPUR:  Hundreds of farmers under the banner Nab Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) staged an agitation and squatted in front of SP office in Jagatsinghpur on Saturday demanding stern action against the inspector of Biridi police station Ranjan Mallik.

They claimed that the arrest of seven farmers for waylaying Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy was humiliating to the community and illegal.

The seven farmers had waylaid the Minister’s vehicle on November 14 at Balia under Biridi police limits demanding compensation to the family of a farmer of Balikuda who had committed suicide. Police resorted to lathicharge to disburse the agitators resulting in injuries to some farmers.

State convenor, NNKS, Akhaya Kumar criticised the lathicharge on innocent farmers during the protest. The arrested farmers were released on bail on November 22.

The farmers called off the stir after Sub-Divisional Police Officer assured a probe into the matter.

A farmer Pabitra Mohan Nayak who was beaten up and arrested by police has filed a case in SDJM court against the Inspector.
