'No Plan for Probe Into Ryot Deaths'

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Wednesday said it has no plan to conduct any special probe into the deaths of farmers who allegedly committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden.

Replying to a question in the Assembly, Agriculture Minister Pradip Maharathy

said Collectors and SPs of different districts have already investigated the cause of deaths and their probe revealed that the suicides were mostly due to personal, domestic, health-related and other reasons, but not due to crop loss or debt burden.

Rejecting the Opposition’s allegation that farmers in large number committed suicide due to crop loss and debt burden, Maharathy said the farmer suicides have no link to agricultural crisis due to drought.

Admitting that reports of 122 farmer suicide cases have been received, Maharathy said the State Government has already announced a package for the drought-hit farmers.

The State Government has made elaborate plans for rabi crop to overcome the drought crisis, he said.
