Immolation Bid Foiled

BHUBANESWAR: Two members of Gomitra Mahasangha attempted self-immolation during a mass rally at Lower PMG here on Friday afternoon.

Forces deployed at the protest site thwarted the attempt by overpowering the Mahasangha members.

The organisation has been protesting for the last four days over three-point charter of demands which include permanent jobs.

On Friday, when the members were taking out a rally from the protest site to the State Assembly, they were prevented by police. When the protesters were engaged in a heated argument with cops, two of them poured kerosene on themselves. The duo was detained by police for sometime and released later.

To discuss the demands of Gomitra Mahasangha, a high-level meeting of the Agriculture Department will be held on December 22, sources said.
