1,000 bags of coal worth Rs 1L Seized

JHARSUGUDA:  Lakhanpur police on Saturday night seized more than 1,000 bags of coal worth Rs one lakh from Ubuda railway siding.

Acting on a tip-off from MCL employees, police conducted a raid and seized the coals which were being transported illegally from MCL’s Ubuda coal siding premises.

Sources said 10 days back, police had also seized smuggled coals.  Local mafias engage villagers who transport around 10 bags of coal on their bicycles from the siding to depots located in the forest. Later, the smuggled coals are transported to business houses in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Chhattisgarh. Lakhanpur Area GM MG Mukund said raids were conducted in nearby forests and security personnel have been deployed near the siding.
