BHUBANESWAR: : Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday advised the State Government to be sensitive to the problems of farmers and pay compensation to families of the ryots who committed suicide due to crop loss.

The State Government should not feel that its reputation will be diminished by admitting the cases of farmer suicide. States like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra have been paying compensation to bereaved farmers’ families. The Government should emulate these States, Pradhan told reporters after a review meeting on railway projects at zonal office of East Coast Railway here.

The State Government should set up a commission of inquiry to find out the reason of increasing number of farmers’ so that corrective measures can be taken, he said.

The Central team, which visited the State to assess drought situation, has submitted its report to Centre. The Centre will take a decision on the grant of relief measures to the State shortly.
