Tax Defaulters to Face Tough Action

BERHAMPUR:The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has decided to snap power and water supply to about 30,000 households for not paying Holding Tax since long.

BeMC Commissioner Anjana Panda said of around 80,000 housesholds in the city paying Holding Tax, nearly 30,000 have not paid the tax despite repeated reminders. “The list of such defaulters is being prepared and the power and water supply to their houses would be disconnected,” Panda said and added that help has been sought from the Public Health Division and Southco in this regard.

Besides, there have been allegations that the land leased by the Corporation to some persons for business activity is lying idle. A survey would be conducted soon to identify the vacant land.

Sources said the Corporation has leased land to about 40 vendors but about 18 of them have not used the land. A market complex would be developed in its place, Panda added.
