The 56 year-old actor was suffering from blood cancer from 2008. After showing his acting skills as a villain, he breathed last today at a private hospital.

The popular actor-director was survived by his wife Jharana and two daughters. He has worked in around 60 Odia films and ruled the hearts of million Odia film lovers from decades.

The doctor who treated him said that he was suffering from blood cancer and was being treated. The doctor further added that he had blood group, B-Negative, which is rare and needed frequent infusion of blood platelets for the past one and half years.

He was treated in Sparsh Hospital, Bhubaneswar.

"We had released him from the hospital and sent him home last evening after realising that the end was near. But he was brought back to the hospital at 8.15 this morning after his condition deteriorated further. He was admitted to the ICU but we could not save him. The end came at 12.40 pm today," the doctor said.

Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, Union ministers Jual Oram, Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP state president K V Singhdeo and OPCC president Prasad Harichandan showed their concern for the untimely death.

People from all walks of life also paid their condolence to Pattnaik. "It is an irreparable loss to the Odisha film industry. Hara Pattnaik had directed many marvellous movies," state Culture Minister Ashok Panda said.
