BHUBANESWAR:Two women died after their two-wheeler was hit by a lorry on NH-5 near Janla here on Friday evening.

The deceased were identified as Tilottama Parida of Kalyanpur and Sabita Biswal of Kalarahanga under Mancheswar police limits. The two were of around 25 years.

Sources said the women were negotiating a turn to avoid a marriage party procession on the busy highway when a speeding truck hit them from behind. The truck, bearing Andhra Pradesh registration number, hit the two-wheeler while trying to overtake it. The truck dragged the two to some distance before coming to a halt. The women sustained serious head injuries and died on their way to  hospital.

Soon after the accident, locals pelted stones at the truck and beat up its driver B Sreenu. Tamando police seized the vehicle and arrested Sreenu. He has been booked for negligent driving leading to death.

In the past two months, three road accidents have claimed five lives and left three others grievously injured on the Baramunda-Jatni stretch of NH-5.
