BHUBANESWAR:  Chandrasekharpur Police have arrested three persons in connection with the robbery that took place at Sailashree Vihar on Saturday. The mastermind of the crime, Ashok Kumar Panigrahi alias Kalu, was employed as a driver in Prof KC Singh’s house for over a month and had quit the job one week before the incident, police said.

The looted gold and silver ornaments, a sharp weapon, one fibre pistol and a motorcycle have been seized from the possession of the accused.

Kalu, a 30-year-old man from Fathegarh in Nayagarh district, along with three others plotted the robbery.

While two of his accomplices have been arrested, the fourth member of the gang is still at large. The two arrested are Bhajaman Khatei and Bichitrananda Baliarsingh of Fathegarh, Police Commissioner Dr RP Sharma said.

Identity of the fourth accused has been established and a manhunt launched to nab him.

On Saturday afternoon, Kalu and his accomplices knocked at Singh’s house while he was at work. His wife Jyotsna Rani Singh was held at gunpoint and the miscreants looted cash and other valuables and fled.

Taking a cue from the incident, the Police Commissionerate is mooting to make it compulsory for residents of the Capital to furnish details of their domestic help or driver to the local police station. A notice in this regard may be published soon, sources said.

“This incident could have been avoided if the victim had sought details of Kalu before employing him as driver. Even while the accused knocked the door, their identity should have been verified,” Sharma said.
