Train Services Hit as Bridge Collapses

ROURKELA: Train services were partially affected on the Howrah-Mumbai route after a part of a railway bridge collapsed at Phatapipe, about 300 metres from Rourkela railway station, on Friday morning.

South Eastern Railway (SER) sources said the bridge located under the train tracks partly caved in due to accumulation of rainwater. As a precautionary measure, the movement of trains was stopped from 8.05 am while Express trains were allowed to run on a joint line. Several goods trains coming from eastern side were detained at Bondamunda and those from western side were returned from Rourkela.

Track restoration work was going on in full swing to restore normalcy by Friday midnight. A passenger train was short terminated and another train was cancelled, sources said.

Chakradharpur-based Divisional Railway Manager Rajendra Prasad accompanied by senior SER officials visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
