Rail Roko at Khurda Over Student's Death

BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of irate passengers and residents of Jatni on Saturday staged a rail roko at Khurda Road station for over an hour protesting the death of an engineering student near Dhaulimuhan station.

Sources said the student, Soumyashree Ashirwad Sahoo of Nayagarh district, was crossing the tracks near Dhaulimuhan station when he was hit by Palasa-Paradip DMU. A seriously injured Sahoo was rushed to Khurda Road railway station by the same train.

A protestor alleged that though passengers made desperate calls to ambulance services at Khurda Road, ambulance reached the station about half an hour late.

Doctors at district headquarters hospital, Khurda declared him dead, he added. Due to negligence on the part of railway authorities, the student died, they alleged. However, the agitators were pacified after GRP authorities intervened and assured an investigation into the alleged negligence. Train services were affected for over an hour posing inconvenience to the passengers.
