Villagers Call Off Economic Blockade

ANGUL:The economic blockade by villagers under the aegis of Talcher Surakhya Manch at Talcher was called off on Wednesday morning following police intervention.

Since Monday, the agitators had closed all MCL offices at Talcher in support of their seven-point charter of demands including establishment of a medical college and hospital (MCH) by MCL in Talcher, water supply to villages and construction of roads.

On Wednesday, a meeting was called by Angul Collector SR Jadhav where he assured the agitators that their demands would be taken up with the Government at a high-level meeting in the State Capital within next 10 days. Sources said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will discuss establishment of the MCH with the MCL Chief in the meeting. Production had come to a grinding halt at the Talcher Coalfield, which produces two lakh tonne of coal per day, due to an indefinite economic blockade launched by the BJD-sponsored Talcher Surakhya Manch.
