Over One Lakh Plus Two Seats Vacant

Over one lakh seats have remained vacant in all the junior colleges in the State after two rounds of admission.

BHUBANESWAR: Over one lakh seats have remained vacant in all the junior colleges in the State after two rounds of admission.

The admission to second merit list of Plus Two concluded on July 17. Of the total sanctioned strength of 4,41,508 in 1,515 colleges, 2,98,503 candidates have taken admission in the first and second phases. As on Monday, 1,43,005 seats had remained vacant.

In Arts, of 2,52,118 total seats, 44,413 remained vacant; in Science, of 1,42,303 seats, 71,157 have no takers. Similarly, 27,435 seats remained vacant in Commerce out of total seat strength of 47,087.

This year, the Department of Higher Education has increased the seat strength in all the junior colleges by 20 per cent expecting a rise in demand.

The merit list for admission to balance seats will be out on Tuesday and admission to the seats would be done on July 25. Classes would begin in the junior colleges on July 30.
