BHUBANESWAR: Police on Wednesday arrested a person on charges of burgling two houses in GA Colony at Chandaka Road here late on Tuesday night and recovered a gold chain from him. The accused Ranjit Kumar Das has been sent to judicial custody.

Burglars broke into the houses and decamped with gold jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. The incident came to light in the wee hours of Wednesday after Bijay Kumar Paikray found a window of his house broken and all household articles strewn everywhere.

Paikray, a former Jail superintendent, said the incident could have occurred in the wee hours as his daughter was studying in her room till 2 am.

The miscreants entered the house by breaking the window of the living room, looted gold ornaments worth about one lakh and a laptop and fled.

Another house in the neighbourhood, of Binod Bihari Patra, was also looted in a similar fashion in the same night, the police said.

The area comes under Ward 22 of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. The locals alleged that police patrolling was scanty and disorganised due to which the area has turned into a haven for anti-socials. Besides, street lighting is poor in the locality.

Khandagiri police have launched a manhunt to nab others involved in the crime.
