SALEPUR: A 16-year-old girl was severely injured after she was assaulted for resisting a rape attempt by her neighbour Ganga Sagar Patra (25) at Majurai village under Govindpur police limits on Thursday night.
According to police sources, the victim, a plus-2 student, was overpowered outside her house by Ganga and was dragged to an isolated place. When the girl strongly resisted the rape attempt, the accused assaulted her, police said.
Ganga then confined the girl to an abandoned room and informed her father over phone that he had rescued his daughter, who was being kidnapped by two unknown persons. The victim’s father Santosh Kumar Patra rushed to spot along with Govindpur police and rescued the girl in an injured condition. Police nabbed Ganga, who was trying to flee from the spot.
