Odisha Balimela College Building Work Shoddy, Allege Students

MALKANGIRI: Students and staff of Balimela College of Science and Technology have urged the district administration to declare the girls’ common room and administrative building of the college, which are lying in a dilapidated condition, as unsafe. They also demanded action against the officials concerned and erring contractor for substandard work.

Sources said these buildings were constructed at an estimated cost of `47 lakh under the Backward Region Grants Fund (BRGF) in 2011-12. The work was executed by Korukonda block. After completion of the work, the buildings were handed over to college authorities on June 19, 2015.

Similarly, lavatories constructed in these buildings are in a shambles. The buildings have developed cracks on walls, locals alleged and demanded a Vigilance probe into the irregularities.

“We fear for the lives of our children and our repeated pleas with the authorities concerned to get the structure repaired have fallen on deaf ears,” the locals said.

“We cannot concentrate on our studies as we fear that the building may collapse anytime,” said a +3 science student.

Meanwhile, in a letter to the Korukonda BDO, principal of the college K Rama Rao sought renovation of the structures. He has also sought the intervention of the Collector in the matter.
