Infant Branded With Hot Iron Bangles

NABARANGPUR: Another infant has been branded with hot iron bangles. This time, the incident has taken place at Ghadakunta village under Dabugam block. The infant was admitted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a serious condition on Wednesday night.

Sukri, wife of Haribandhu Bhotra of the village, had given birth to a girl child 26 days back. A few days after her birth, the girl’s stomach swelled and she started vomiting. The couple called a ‘dishari’ (village quack) who branded the girl’s stomach and chest with hot iron bangles.  As the couple did not bring their daughter to polio booth on Sunday, ANM of the area Subalaya Harijan visited their house on Tuesday. She found the girl in a serious condition after being branded with hot iron bangles.

She asked the parents to take the infant to Community Health Centre at Dabugam, but they did not do so. Subalaya again visited them on Wednesday and brought the infant along with her mother to the CHC. As the condition of the infant was serious, doctors referred her to the DHH.

Doctors said the condition of the infant is critical and she is suffering from pneumonia and septicaemia.
