Hirakud Dam Scanning in Early March

SAMBALPUR: The second phase of underwater scanning for cracks in Hirakud Dam by Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS), New Delhi, will begin in the first week of March.

Chief Engineer, Hirakud Dam Project, Biswajit Mohanty said the power dam will be scanned in the second phase. He said that the team is yet to submit the first phase scanning report.

The team, however, stated during a discussion that the cracks, which were treated, had not developed further, Mohanty said. The alkali-silica reaction, which causes cracks in the dam, too has reduced but the final analysis report is awaited to come to a conclusion, he added.

Meanwhile, it is still not clear whether the same team, which had undertaken scanning in the first phase, will resume work in the second phase or a new team of scientists will join in.

In the first phase, three-member team from CSMRS comprising Alex Varghese, Birendra Pratap and Shivcharan had scanned the upstream face of Hirakud dam to ascertain the condition of cracks and make an assessment based on it.
