BHUBANESWAR: The Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) has requested puja committees to apply for temporary connection to use safe and reliable electricity during the festive season beginning from Dussera.

All puja committee members have been advised to contact their local electrical section office or sub-division office for temporary connection of electricity to ‘puja pandals’, CESU spokesperson GB Sahu said.

The utility has further requested puja committee functionaries to use energy saving lights for decorative purposes to reduce electricity consumption during the period. This will help reduction of carbon emission, he said and advised the committees to use electrical appliances that qualify legal and safety measures.

As a large number of pandals will use additional electricity during Durga Puja, Laxmi Puja and Kali Puja, the power distribution company has taken up pre-maintenance of lines and sub-stations in different areas of its operation, more particularly in the Twin City of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Besides, arrangements have been made to provide uninterrupted power supply during the festivals.

Stating that unauthorised use of electricity by hooking is a cognisable offence, Sahu said the company has formed special squads for de-hooking illegal connection in all the distribution divisions of nine districts.

Illegal use of power is an offence under the Electricity Act,2003 and offenders will be prosecuted under the law.

CESU has opened customer care centres which will function round-the-clock to receive power-related complaints.
