JAGATSINGHPUR: A 21-year-old youth has been charged with rape and attempt to murder a woman in Arakhia village under Kujang police limits on Sunday.
Sources said the woman had gone to a nearby field for collection of grass when the youth Suvendu Swain of the village forcibly took her to an isolated place and committed the crime. Then he attempted to kill her to suppress the matter. Hearing her screams, a villager rushed to the spot and rescued the woman. Swain managed to escape. Later, the victim went to local police station to file an FIR in this connection but the police personnel allegedly misbehaved her and passed lewd comments. Villagers led by Sarpanch of Mallashai, Chittranjan Swain, intervened into the matter and forced the police to file an FIR. Following which, police registered a case and started investigation to nab the accused.
