BERHAMPUR: The secretary of Berhampur University students’ union Sasikant Nayak, athletic secretary Padmasen Mahanandia and an MPhil student Debashish Behera were attacked by some students and outsiders on the campus when they were retuning to their hostel on Saturday night. Apparently, the attackers included some inmates of another hostel, as per the complaint filed by the victims with the police.

The three managed to escape from their clutches and entered the hostel. Although they locked the hostel gate, the attackers tried to forcefully open it but failed. Nayak informed the local police, who rushed to the spot and took the three to MKCG MCH for treatment. After preliminary treatment, the three filed a complaint at Gopalpur police station. They alleged that 10 to 15 persons including some inmates of hostel no 2 were behind the attack.

On Sunday morning, the injured students along with other inmates of the hostel 1 went to the university guest house to inform Vice-Chancellor and Registrar about the attack, but finding them absent they resorted to agitation. Receiving information, police rushed to the spot and assured to initiate action against the attackers.

The students alleged that university has not restricted entry of outsiders into the campus which is resulting in frequent violent incidents. Besides, there are no safety measures in place for the hostel inmates. The students threatened to hit the streets if the attackers are not nabbed at the earliest and steps are not taken to ensure students’ safety.
