Two held in Ganjam sorcery attack case

BERHAMPUR: Jarada police on Thursday arrested two persons in connection with the attack on two alleged ‘sorcerers’ at Sundarballavpur in Patrapur block of Ganjam district. They have been identified as Ashok Naik and Alekh Naik of Dalit Street area.

Last month, two children of the village had died due to unknown diseases. As Bancha Naik and Basu Naik of the village did not attend the funeral, the villagers suspected them to be  sorcerers. On August 30, the residents of Dalit Street complained about the incident during a village committee meeting. However, the committee advised them to settle the dispute at their caste meeting. Though the residents returned from the meeting, later they attacked Basu and Bancha in the night.

On Wednesday, being informed, police reached the village and investigated the matter. Police on Thursday arrested the duo and seized the hammer used during the attack. A case has been registered and investigation is on. More villagers are likely to be arrested in this connection, said police. The arrested were forwarded to court.
