Dhamnagar MLA seeks pre-arrest bail

BHADRAK: Dhamnagar MLA Mukti Mandal applied for anticipatory bail in the High Court on Tuesday after a Bhadrak court incriminated him in the murder of one Niranjan Jena. The court acted on the direction of the High Court on Monday.

Jena of Sugo village under Basudevpur police limits was killed in November 2002. In his dying declaration in Bhadrak district hospital, Jena accused six persons, including Mukti Mandal, of his murder.

Dusasan Jena, uncle of the deceased, had lodged an FIR in Basudevpur police station and Mandal was the main accused here.

But the then Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Basudevpur police station Benudhar Nayak deleted Mandal’s name from the chargesheet.

In August 2007, Dusasan filed a petition in Bhadrak court against the chargesheet of police and prayed to enlist Mandal as the prime accused in Jena’s murder. But, his petition was dismissed. Later, Dusasan appealed in the High Court.

Pressure had been mounting on the district police to arrest Mandal.
