CUTTACK: Plastic surgeons at SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday put smile back on the face 0f 15-year-old Anita Raika, literally. After a 10-hour ordeal, they removed a 7 kg tumour from her mandible that had not only disfigured her face once, but also prevented her from smiling.
Born to Abhram and Batir Raika of Tumachara village in Gajapati district, Anita had developed a swelling on the mandible at the age of 13. Later, it transformed into a huge tumour. Doctors elsewhere failed to help her until the Head of Plastic Surgery Department Dr. Arun Choudhury agreed to conduct the surgery with the support of Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram(RBSK) Yojana.
Anita was admitted to SCBMCH on October 7. However, inadequate hemoglobin in her blood delayed the process. She was, therefore, given six units of blood.Later, the SCB doctors removed the tumour successfully. "Generally mandible tumours are not so common. It is also rare in case of children. It was too difficult to administer anaesthesia and adopt other life saving equipment on her face due to the tumour," said Choudhury, adding her condition is improving in the ICU.
