Parents cry negligence as baby dies during delivery

ROURKELA: A newborn died at Kujang Community Health Centre (CHC) and family members alleged medical negligence on Saturday. The couple alleged that in the absence of doctor, a sweeper and ANM were engaged for the delivery which led to the death of the infant.

Sources said Prathipriya Rout of Chardia village under Kujang police limits was admitted to the hospital after she developed labour pain on Saturday. When she reached  Kujang CHC, sweeper Gopinath Gochayat and ANM Banaja Sahu took her to OT room for delivery without informing the gynaecologist.
Her husband Surayakant Rout said Gochayat and Sahu handled the situation carelessly leading to the infant’s death. Later, the family members shifted the child and mother to Sishu Bhavan, Cuttack where the infant was declared brought dead.

Rout alleged that during admission, the ANM and the sweeper also demanded `3,000.
On Sunday, villagers staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding action against the medical staff. Kujang police rushed to the spot and pacified them.Meanwhile, Rout lodged an FIR at Kujang police station.Chief District Medical Officer Sarat Kumar Sahu said the Medical Officer of Kujang CHC has been asked to submit a report in this regard.
