BHUBANESHWAR: A day after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class XII results, over 200 students laid siege to the board's regional office here on Monday demanding re-evaluation following discrepancies in the marks.

Students and parents staged an agitation in front of the CBSE office alleging that grace marks were not given in most subjects.

While results of several students across Odisha were withheld, a majority found that they had failed after the pending scorecards were posted on the CBSE website on Monday. Some students were startled to spot that they got marks in papers that they did not write.

A delegation led by parents’ association convener Sudarsan Das met CBSE authorities who assured to sort out the discrepancies within a week. “Copies of our memorandum will be sent to the CBSE chairman and chief minister Naveen Patnaik. Simultaneously, we will also file petitions in the Orissa High Court tomorrow,” Das said.

Saismita Ray, a student of DAV Pokhariput was expecting more than 90 per cent but scored 76 percent. “I scored in the range of 60 to 70 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics while I just about passed in Biology. This is unacceptable,” she said.

Bhagyashree Mishra who passed with a 41 percent when she received her scorecard said, ‘While I had performed well and expected at least over 80 percent, I got single digit marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computers.”

The students said mark modulation or grace marks policy has been implemented only in metropolitan cities. "Odisha has been ignored by the CBSE which was directed by the Delhi High Court not to scrap modulation ‘marking’ this year. It is hard to believe that the modulation policy was implemented for over 11 lakh examinees within 48 hours,” Saumya Das , whose child got 58 per cent marks said.

Meanwhile, repeated attempts by the media to contact CBSE authorities were futile for the second consecutive day. Latest reports said the protests were still continuing on the CBSE regional office premises of CBSE and one platoon has been deployed apprehending a law and order situation.

The Bhubaneswar CBSE regional office oversees Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
