Sanitary napkin dispenser in Bhubaneswar-Jagadalpur Hirakhand Express

BHUBANESWAR: Women passengers travelling in Express and Passenger trains can now get sanitary napkins on board. Moved by the success of napkin vending machines at railway stations, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has provisioned a napkin dispenser in Bhubaneswar-Jagadalpur Hirakhand Express. The ECoR, which has introduced the facility in the train on a pilot basis, plans to extend it to other trains plying mostly in interior areas.

The slim and sleek vending machine installed by East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (ECoRWWO) dispenses a sanitary napkin after a `5 coin is inserted. It has a capacity to carry 25 napkins at a time and can be refilled from time to time.ECoRWWO president Madhulika Singh said Hirakhand Express is the first train in the region to have such a machine. “Women passengers will not only get the napkins at their convenience, the initiative would also promote their well-being,” she said.

Even as the vending machine is installed in a washroom of an air-conditioned coach, passengers from non-AC and unreserved coaches can use it.Chief public relations officer of ECoR JP Mishra said Hirakhand was chosen because it is an important train for the region where women hardly have access to napkins on travel. “The train serves a huge tribal area and is a popular connecting train for Bhubaneswar, Koraput, Rayagada and Jagadalpur areas,” he added.

One such machine was installed in Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express some time back and was a huge success. The ECoRWWO has already installed napkin dispensers at Bhubaneswar, Puri, Sambalpur, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram railway stations under ECoR jurisdiction. Each machine has a carrying capacity of 75 napkins. The ECoR would instal the mini machines in other trains after analysing the demand and users’ feedback.
