BERHAMPUR: A 12-year-old girl died while attempting to save her three siblings from drowning in the village pond at Chikili village within Khallikote police limits on Thursday.
The deceased is Jelina Pradhan. Sources said Jelina along with her sisters Selina (10), Elina (8) and Srihari (9) had gone to the village pond for bathing when the trio slipped deeper into the water body.
Hearing their screams, Jelina jumped to their rescue and with much difficulty managed to bring them out in an unconscious state. Locals had gathered at the spot by that time but none remembered to rescue Jelina.
By the time they realised she had not come out of the pond, her body was found floating. The four kids were rushed to the local hospital where Jelina was declared dead. Her sisters were shifted to Khallikote hospital and their condition is stated to be stable.
On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem. An unnatural death case was registered in this connection.
