CHENNAI: The Election Commission will take action against those polling booth officials, who have not registered the details of the identification document submitted by a voter for casting his vote on May 13 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing reporters on the eve of the counting on Friday, Naresh Gupta, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), said the details of such officials and the 49 (O) voters were sought from the polling stations across the State.

The CEO, however, declined to comment on alleged money distribution in various constituencies.Talking about the complaints on omission of names in the current Electoral Rolls, he said ``onus was mainly on the voter’’ to include his name in the voter’s list. But he added that the specific cases of omission of names of individuals would be looked into and action would be taken to rectify it.

“There is annual upgradation of the rolls with reference to January 1 as the qualifying date. Apart from the annual revision, the electoral registration system also provides for continuous updation, although this may not be widely known or utilised except during the period when elections are held,’’ he said.

He said there was no independent machinery for the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls, which was mainly carried out by the staff of revenue Department, the local bodies and school teachers.

“During the house-to-house verification, the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are expected to list out the missing names as well as the surplus names.

In the case of missing names, they have to give Form 6 for the inclusion while for the surplus names (those who have shifted residence), they have to submit a report.”
