CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Friday appealed to the Centre to immediately airdrop food and water in war-affected Tamil areas in Sri Lanka.

“News reports coming from Lanka indicate that there is a danger of Tamils, including those in camps in army-held areas, dying of starvation... The number of those who die this way could exceed the number of those killed in hostilities,” she said.

India airdropped food in Lanka during the height of the ’87 ‘Operation Liberation’ by Lanka against LTTE. On June 4, after Lanka did not agree to India’s demands to end the operation, the air force conducted ‘Operation Eagle’, dropping 25 tonne of food in Jaffna city. Lanka backed down and signed the India-Sri Lanka peace accord on July 29, 1987.
