Cellphone jammers at central prison
PUDUCHERRY: In a bid to prevent planning of crimes by convicts lodged in the Puduchery Central Prison, three static mobile phone jammers have been installed at Central Jail complex at Kalapet. Home Minister E Valsaraj commissioned the jammers on Tuesday.
Several murders have been reportedly masterminded from the prison using mobile phones. This forced the government to procure jammers from Bharat Electronics at a cost of `62,57,759. The Public Works Department has also constructed separate towers and shelters at four points in the jail complex at a cost of `12,50,000.
Chief Secretary R Chandramohan, Director General of Police Alok Kumar Verma and other officials were present.
`17 crore for prison complex: A fund of `17 crore has been allocated for construction activities in the second phase of work on Puducherry Central Prison complex, said Home Minister E Valsaraj.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Valsaraj said 19 jail wardens would be appointed soon. Of this, 25 per cent would be reserved for home guards. Earlier, an x-ray baggage scanner was also installed.
The videoconferencing facility available in the prison would be extended to sub-jails in Karaikal and Mahe, the minister said.
