CHENNAI: Irked at Mayor M Subramanian’s refusal to reconsider a resolution to add 99,715 new beneficiaries in the BPL category, a CPM councillor staged a walkout from the Corporation council meet here on Tuesday.

During a discussion on the resolution, Devi — CPM councillor of ward 59 — raised an objection to resolution number 26, citing discrepancies in selecting from within the city limits the real beneficiaries for the Centre-sponsored old age pension and the widows’ pension schemes.

“I had recommended several genuine beneficiaries to be included in both the schemes. But, not a single person has been included and that shows the prevalence of corrupt practices in the process of selection,” complained Devi.

“Since the list needed to be verified to ascertain whether deserving beneficiaries avail of the scheme, the resolution should be deferred until thorough verification,” she urged the Mayor.

However, the Mayor was in no mood to defer the resolution, as it had been tabled in the House as a last-minute agenda, considering the urgency of the matter.

Besides Devi, a few other councillors also complained that anomalies and discrepancies prevailed in the selection of real beneficiaries of both the schemes.

Assuring the councillors that the list of beneficiaries would soon be sent to them for verification, Subramanian said, “If they find faults or ghost names, a resolution will be adopted in the next council meeting to delete the suspected beneficiaries’ names.”
