NAGERCOIL: The Mambazhathuraiyar reservoir constructed at an outlay of Rs 20.97 crore was commissioned by Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin at Villukury, near Thuckalay, on Tuesday.

The Deputy CM was in Kanyakumari district to participate in various government functions, including commissioning  of the reservoir.

Speaking at a function at the Government Higher Secondary School in Thuckalay, Stalin said the reservoir project was first initiated by the DMK government in 1999 and it was proposed to build a reservoir with 27.26 million cubic feet capacity at an outlay of Rs 9.50 crore. But when the AIADMK came to power, the project was kept pending.

Stalin further said that if the AIADMK government had finished the Mambazhathuraiyar reservoir project within the stipulated period, it might have reduced ` 11.47 crore in expenditure. Because of this, an additional expenditure has been imposed on the government, he added.

He said the AIADMK government had frozen new recruitments in government sector, but the present government had recruited 27,189 policemen during the last four-and-a-half years of its rule. He further said that through TNPSC, 26,009 persons have been recruited and through employment offices 1,14,338 persons have been recruited.

Earlier, Vilavancode CPM MLA John Joseph, in his felicitation address, demanded that the Deputy Chief Minister talk to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi about constituting a committee to hold talks with the Kerala government on the Neyyar water issue.
