MADURAI: Ten persons were killed in the recent heavy downpours in the district, said Collector C Kamaraj, here on Tuesday.
Speaking to media persons, the Collector said that incessant rain was lashing all parts of the district and the level in all water bodies, including tanks, ponds and channels, were witnessing a steep increase.
So far, 10 persons, including 4 women and 4 children, have died in different rain-related incidents in the district, the Collector said.
As many as 73 houses were damaged, including ten fully, in the rain. All the rain affected victims were being provided with necessary relief materials.
About 192 hectares of farm lands were under water in the district so far. The exact amount of damage to crops could be assessed only after the rain stops, the Collector said.
However, there was no major damage due to rains so far. Since the inflow of water to Vaigai was increasing, the district administration was taking several precautionary measures to protect people living on the banks. Those living on the banks in Sholavandhan, Vadipatti, Thenur, Thuvariman, Madurai North and Madurai South have been issued advised to move to safer places. Revenue and Public Works Division officials have been deployed at taluk levels to monitor the level in all water bodies, the Collector said.
In case of rainwater entering in low lying areas, the officials would take adequate measures to drain the water out and rescue trapped persons. “The district administration is fully prepared to face any emergency arising out of floods,” Kamaraj said.
