CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police on a petition from an inmate of the Repatriated Indian Refugee Camp in Rayanoor in Karur district praying for a direction to the CBI to take up investigation on her complaint alleging that her 26-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by certain policemen and the girl committed suicide.
Justice K Suguna ordered the notice on a writ petition from B Padmavathi.
Petitioner alleged that she and her daughter Padmadevi were taken by some policemen to an isolated place behind the office of the Karur District Collector on March 7 this year. The girl was taken to a building by the policemen and was sexually assaulted. Padmadeviimmolated herself the same day and was hospitalised with severe burns.
Following the intervention of advocates Damayanth and M Pari, the matter got the attention of the media and the people. Padmadevi, however, succumbed to burns on March 28.
As the local police bungled in the investigation and attempted to shield the culprits, she filed the present petition in the High Court to transfer the case to the CBI.
