CHENNAI: Former AIADMK Minister and a close associate of late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, died here on Tuesday after prolonged illness. He was 78 and is survived by two sons and two daughters.

Krishnaswamy is the brother of late K A Madhiyazhagan, one of the founding members of the DMK.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa paid homage to her party colleague in the afternoon. Her aide N Sasikala, party presidium chairman E Madhusudanan, Sulochana Sampath, Visalakshi Nedunchezhiyan and D Jayakumar accompanied her.

Expressing deep grief over the demise of former Minister K A Krishnaswamy, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday recalled the late leader's services to the party since its inception in 1972.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Deputy CM M K Stalin and DMK cadre paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of Krishanaswamy kept at his Lloyds Colony residence.

In his condolence message, Karunanidhi said 'Kaniyur family' was very important for the Dravidian movement and the family has now met with a big loss through the demise of Krishnaswamy.

Born in 1932 at Kaniyur, Krishnaswamy involved himself in the activities of the Dravidian movement even during his student days.

In 1972, the then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi appointed him as a member of the Rajya Sabha. When MGR launched the AIADMK, in the same year, he was the first MP to join the new party. Krishnaswamy had the privilege of serving as the first organising secretary of the party and brought out a daily called Thennagam in support of the AIADMK.

In 1978, he became an MLC and was a Minister in the MGR Cabinet. Later, he was elected from Thousand Lights constituency in 1984 defeating DMK candidate M K Stalin and again became a Minister. He held the portfolios of Cooperation, Small Industries, Dairy Development and Local Administration. Later, in 1991, he became the Law Minister in the government headed by J Jayalalithaa. After 1996, he had kept himself away from active politics.

Krishnaswamy's son K A K Mukil is now the joint secretary of the youth wing of the AIADMK.

The funeral will take place on May 19 at Besant Nagar crematorium.
