COIMBATORE: Tribal women at Anaikatti are now an empowered lot as they have learnt the yet another ‘art’ to supplement their income.
Avinashilingam Jan Shiksan Sansthan is imparting training in art and craft work to tribal women thereby bringing out their vocational skill.
V Balasubramanian, director, Jan Shiksan Sansthan told Express that the training was jointly organised with the support of State Forest Department and Tribal Federation (TRIFED).
About 100 tribal women from eight settlements around Anaikatti were selected for the 12-day vocational training, which started on August 26 at Kopanari hamlet.
The tribal women were imparted training on Warli (tribal art) and coffee painting, bamboo craft, pot and fabric painting, 10 types of tribal jewellry making, hand embroidery and block painting besides toys-making.
Expressing satisfaction over the interest shown by the tribal women, V Ramanathan, regional manager, TRIFED said according to him this is the first time in the country that over 100 tribal women took part in vocational training.
Besides the vocational training, the women were also trained in yoga and singing group songs.
DFO I Anwaruddeen told Express this programme is aimed at socio economic development of tribals with a view to supplement their income.
Similar programmes would be held at Palamalai, Karamadai and Pilloor Dam.
And forest department foots the bill for the training.
The Tribal Cooperative and Marketing Development Federation has taken the responsibility of marketing the products through their 40 outlets spread across the country.
Balasubramanian said that there are about 10,000 products made by tribals in different parts of the country.
