TIRUPUR: Over 6,000 garment unit workers staged a demonstration under the aegis of Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee (TIPC) for urging the state government to initiate measures for reopening the dyeing units.

According to the organisers the demonstration was organised aimed at drawing the attention of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to intervene directly on the dyeing effluent problem to solve the crisis.

They said, “For the past six months following the closure of the dyeing units thousands of workers have been rendered jobless. Lakhs of migrant workers are helpless and are forced to seek other jobs to eke out a living.”

“The ruling party gave an assurance at the time of polls to solve the problem soon and called for postponing the protests announced by various organisations,” the workers recalled.

The protestors sought a favourable action from the State government to rejuvenate the Tirupur knitwear industry from its present problems. Thousands of workers from garment manufacturing and its allied units and representatives from various trade associations and garment associations took part in the agitation.
