KARAIKAL: The Karaikal District Development Co-ordination Committee has submitted a Rs 590-crore plan to the Puducherry government for the development of Karaikal region.

Addressing a special meeting of the committee in the presence of agriculture minister M Chandrakasu, the chairman of the committee VMC Sivakumar said Karaikal region had long been getting just about 14 per cent of the plan allocation granted to Puducherry UT.

The important objective of the committee was to get allocation for Karaikal district on the basis of its area.

Karaikal occupied one-third of the area of the UT, he said. As there was an increased need for improved roads, reconstruction of old bridges, drinking water supply, power distribution, health and education infrastructure, a comprehensive development plan with an outlay of Rs 590 crore had been submitted to the government, said Sivakumar.

He added that the committee would urge the government to allocate adequate funds for long pending projects such as the new collectorate complex, indoor stadium, infrastructure for Government Engineering College, underground drainage system, second phase beautification of the Karaikal Ammaiyar temple tank and speedy implementation of the Thirunallar Temple City Project. Other projects included reconstruction of old Nehru Market, establishment of a super specialty hospital, setting up of the special economic zone and other projects in the district.

District collector Dr Franklin Laltinkhuma, sub-collector J Ashok Kumar, MLAs AMH Nazeem, PR Siva and PRN Thirumurugan, joint director of planning Mohan, PWD superintending engineer Kanagaraj and other officials and members of the committee attended the meeting. Minister Chandrakasu and MLAs of Karaikal district, who attended the meeting, assured their full cooperation for making Karaikal a model district.
